On October 3rd, dancer and dance maker Elisabeth Schilling will give a workshop in her improvisation methodology ‚The SIXFOLD BODY’ at DOCK 11 in Berlin.

This methodology introduces an approach into solo improvisation and composition: six different perspectives on the body inspire diverse movement impulses, which are in communication with each other and thus understand the body as a complex whole.

Generally speaking, it introduces a set of six interrelated, variable and pragmatically-conceived layers:

the architectural body, or the body in and as space, a body which relates itself to space and in which spatial relationships become possible,

the rhythmical body, the timing of the body, its feeling for time, its temporality, but also its musicality, ist rhythmicality;

the imaginative body, the body which calls upon, encapsulates and enagages with the entire complex of our images and imaginations and associations;

the resonating body, the body which absorbs, processes and plays back all the echoes and reverberations of the world passing through the body;

the transitional body, the body at the threshold between states, a catalyst of creativity at the moment of decision, both closing down and opening up possibilities;

finally, the textural body, the body as a multiplicity of individuating intensities.

During this workshop, Elisabeth will introduce the participants to those six different bodies and will then consolidate these approaches so that the participants can explore and delve into the complex, multi-layered and exciting world of solo-improvisation.

Elisabeth is very excited to have been invited by Rita Severis, the director of Severis Foundation, to perform her work SIXFOLD at CVAR, Centre of  visual arts and research.

The performance will take place on September 1st at 8pm.

Music and dance performance inspired by the collections of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and Cypriot folklore. During the performance, a video art animation based on geometrical motifs from the BoCCF’s collections will be projected on the set and directly on the dancer’s massive dress. This will provide a visual interpretation of the musicians’ sounds, combined with pre-recorded material, and will serve as an extension of the dancer’s gestural palette.

The performance’s themes draw upon the island’s folklore and on Greek mythology, exploring the idea of confinement as obstacle, punishment, sacrifice and means of redemption. As implied by the title “Desmōtēs”, this includes myths about prisoners such as the sacrifice of Prometheus, the immuration of Antigone and the captivity of Persephone.

Review of SIXFOLD following the performances in Aberdeen:

‘The moon on a string…A feeling of restraint and release, of emergence and rebirth. The movement took unexpected turns, from minimal to tentative starts to pushing boundaries and taking form in strength. With every limb hidden was a piece released in other forms. The music bursting to a crescendo and crushing on the back and shoulder of the dancer, releasing her in a way from the string and the planet engulfing her previously. […] There is calm in this struggle…’ Simon Scott

Thank you to City Moves Dance Agency and The Anatomy Rooms for making it possible.

Elisabeth is delighted to be back in Mainz to work on the intercultural project ‘Dance connects and unites’. This project takes place in the refugee home Zwerchallee and invites children who fled from their homes as well as locals children to meet and get to know each other through the art form of dance.

This project is part of ‘Jedem Kind seine Kunst’ which is kindly supported by the Ministery of Culture Rheinland-Pfalz and Foundation Juvente Mainz.
